Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali
The Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali was founded on April 12th 1874 by a small group of scientists under the leadership of Giuseppe Meneghini, who was the first President. Its mission was fostering and supporting scientific activities carried out in the disciplinar ambitus of Natural Sciences and to publish the scientific work of its members. Benchmarks of this activity are the Society journal (“Atti della Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali”), its library and the Natural History Museums.
The Scientific Museums that have been created through times under the auspices of the Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali, have been incorporated in 1985 in the Museo di Storia Naturale e del Territorio of Pisa University (http://www.msn.unipi.it).
Another prestigious journal, Palaeontographia Italica, founded by Mario Canavari, was published under the auspices of the Società Toscana from 1895 to 2005 (issue I-XCI).
The Presidents of the Società have been:
Giuseppe Meneghini (1874 – 1889), Sebastiano Richiardi (1890 – 1903), Giovanni Arcangeli (1904 – 1920 ), Mario Canavari (1921 – 1928), Biagio Longo (1929 – 1930), Leopoldo Granata (1931 – 1937), Giuseppe Stefanini (1938), Alberto Chiarugi (1939 – 1950), Mario Benazzi (1951 – 1961; 1964 – 1983), Livio Trevisan (1962 – 1964; 1984 – 1989), Paolo Meletti (1990-1993), Marco Tongiorgi (1994 – 2005), Stefano Merlino (2006- 2010), Paolo Roberto Federici (2011 - ).
The “Atti della Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali” were first published in 1875. They were printed as two separate volumes: “Memorie” and “Processi Verbali”. Since 1942 the “Processi Verbali”, that contained the texts of the oral presentations performed during the conventions of the society members, have been incorporated into the “Memorie” volume. Starting from 1948, the “Memorie” were subdivided into two separate journals: Atti della Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali, Memorie, Serie A (ISSN 0365-7655?), in which works pertaining to the different branches of Earth Science, Anthropology, Paleoethnology and Prehistorical Sciences were published, and Atti della Società Toscana di Scienze Naturali, Memorie, Serie B (ISSN 0365-7450?), that collected papers in the fields of Biology. Some monographic volumes have also been published as Supplementi. Both journals are sent to many libraries all over the world, thanks to exchanges established with a great number of scientific societies worldwide.
